Meeting with syndicate members of private universities held at UGC
A view exchange meeting with syndicate members of private universities nominated by University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh was held at UGC Bhaban on 25 February.
Chairman of UGC Professor Abdul Mannan graced the function as the Chief Guest. Professor Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain, Member presided over the meeting. UGC Members Professor Dr. Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah and Professor Dr. Dil Afroza Begum spoke as Special Guests.
Addressing the programme, the UGC Chairman said that some private universities do not arrange syndicate, finance committee and board of trusties meetings in years. “It is a violation of Private University Act 2010,” he added. As per the rules, a syndicate meeting will be held in every two months.
He also said UGC wants to ensure quality education for all and “education should not be for profit.” He also said some private universities followed government and UGC’s rules and regulations and are providing quality education.
The Syndicate Members suggested UGC to introduce a ranking system, enhance monitoring, build good relations with private universities, appointed more UGC nominated members in syndicate, prepare recruitment policy, set criteria for private university admission, teachers recruitment under UGC and stopped opening department whimsically in private university. Speakers also said elaborate programmes need to enhance quality and research works of private universities.
Syndicate Members from over 40 private universities took part in the meeting. Director of UGC Private University Division Dr. Fakhrul Islam, senior officials from UGC, among other, were present. As per Private University Act 2010, UGC nominates a syndicate member among the 11- member syndicate.
