UGC urges public university authorities to strengthen security measures

Recently, University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh is observing with anxiety that students are being victim of harassment in different ways in some public universities of the country, even if, untoward incidents like killing are also taking place in these higher educational institutions. Such problematic occurrences are pushing the students’ lives to uncertainty and making the country unstable side by side with destroying the overall environment of the university campus. Under this situation, UGC urged the university administration to take immediate and effective steps for resolving the prevailing crisis. 

The University Grants Commission of Bangladesh has recently requested the public universities to strengthen security measures for teachers-students and officers-employees concerned with education through all-times monitoring from every class room to hall and campus. It also urged the university administration to make the concerned provost, assistant provost/ house tutors alert for maintaining security of the students at every hall and university. Proctorial body/ DSW will ensure security through continuous monitoring. In this regard, university’s highest administration will extend cooperation, if needed. The Commission called upon the university authority to continue publicity against raging and drug alongside ensuring security. The UGC also urged the university administration to take help from UGC or its local administration, as and when necessary. Apart from these, the Commission asked university to follow properly the directives issued by the UGC earlier.

Prior to this, UGC had issued letter, containing a number of directives to the public university administration on 08 January 2019 for ensuring security measures for the students, education-friendly environment at campus premises and its dormitories, undertaking and implementing anti ragging and drug program and stopping all kinds of harassment by the senior students on junior ones.
