SAARC University to celebrate 100th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu
South Asian University (SAU) will celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 2020 with due respect and festivity.
The decision was taken at SAU’s Financial Experts Committee meeting held in New Delhi, India on 14 June 2019. Dr. Kavita A Sharma, President of SAU presided over the meeting where seven member nations of South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC) were present.
Professor Dr. M. Shah Nowaz Ali, Member of University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh took part in the meeting and placed the proposal to celebrate the birth anniversary of Bangabandhu on 17 March of 2020.
Participating members of the meeting welcomed the proposal of Professor Shah Nowaz Ali and unanimously approved it.
In the meeting, Professor Shah Nowaz said a seminar, workshop/cultural program may be organized to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bangabandhu. The government of Bangladesh will finance the expenditure on this account. “At first, Pakistan opposed his proposal. But, later accept it”, he said.
The UGC Member said Bangabandhu’s 100th birth anniversary observance in SAARC University will be a great achievement for Bangladesh. “From this, the youngsters of SAARC countries can enrich their knowledge about Bangabandhu, his contributions to Liberation War of Bangladesh. The celebration programme will play an important role for peace and prosperous SAARC and develop relationship among the member countries.”
South Asian University is an international university established by the eight member nations of SAARC. SAU started its operations from the academic year 2010.
