Addressing the programme, Professor Manzoorul Islam said we have to work on Bangabandhu's education thoughts to build Bangladesh as a prosperous country. "He believed that our progress depends on the pursuit of new knowledge. And, university is the ideal institutions to create new knowledge," Manzoorul Islam said adding Bangabandhu gave autonomy to the university and respected the teachers’ community most.

Bangabandhu realized said education goals will not be fulfilled if the country's GDP is below 4 percent. "Today, we did not ensure 4 percent of GDP for the education sector," he added.

Bangabandhu formed the National Education Commission for building an educated, science-minded and merit-based society. The commission submitted its report to the then government but its recommendations are yet to be implemented. "If the recommendations were implemented accordingly, we could certainly go ahead in this sector," he said. Professor Islam also said “today, we stepped down from his thoughts. We have to work more to materialize the thoughts of Bangabandhu.”

UGC Chairman Kazi Shahidullah urged all to uphold the spirit
