UGC Chairman urges VCs to recruit qualified teachers

UGC Chairman Professor Dr. Kazi Shahidullah, at a programme, urged the Vice-Chancellors of country’s public and private universities to recruit qualified teachers for the quality enhancement and excellence in higher education.

Qualitative change in higher education is not possible unless the competent candidates are recruited as teachers. The standard and quality of education imparted by both the public and private universities is gradually deteriorating. Side by side, the teaching quality of the teachers’ community at universities is also worsening, he said.

Qualification in teachers’ recruitment at universities is not being properly evaluated in most of the cases. It is not possible to get rid of this situation just with the technology if the right people are not recruited, observed the UGC Chairman.

Professor Kazi Shahidullah made the observation while speaking as the Chief Guest at a workshop on  current status of IQACs at Private University and ways to step forward at UGC on 28 January 2020.

The Chief Guest observed if the candidates committed to education and teaching profession are recruited, the country’s tertiary education will reach the desired goal. He noted only the increasing in facilities for the teachers’ community cannot contribute to the quality development of tertiary education. The lost image in higher education sector should be regained in combined efforts, he opined.

Mentioning that  even private universities will not be spared if these institutions resort to irregularities and  ther malpractices by flouting the rules in running the universities, UGC Chairman said, private universities have to take approval of UGC and abide by the rules in opening up of subjects and enrolling students. Three private universities have been fined for enrolling students  beyond the permitted number of seats.

With UGC Member Professor Dr. Muhammed Alomgir in the chair, the workshop was attended, among ohters, by UGC Members Professor Dr. Dil Afroza Begum, Professor Dr. Md. Sazzad Hossain, vice-chancellors from 42 private universities, Directors from UGC and IQACs.

Professor Alomgir, in his presidential speech said that University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh does not distinguish the country’s public and private universities in higher education. He noted the universities which will ensure quality education will be accepted by the people and rewarded.

Regarding Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) he opined that it will create pace, momentum and quality culture at university level. IQAC will play a vital role to proceed the country’s universities in world ranking. There is no alternative to higher education in implementation of Vision-2041, he said. Professor Alomgir further opined the higher education activities of the country will be outcome- based education.
